Australian professional tennis player Nick Kyrgios has built quite a reputation as a controversial character. But when you’ve won seven ATP Tour singles titles, there’s little you can do to keep yourself away from the media’s eyes.
Inasmuch as Kyrgios has often divided opinions with his actions, the one thing that cannot be taken away from him is his love for his family.
The 27-year-old was raised to become who he is today by his parents and he’s openly indebted to them. In August when Kyrgios defeated fellow Australian Alex de Minaur at the Canadian Open. He used the occasion to shed light on his parents’ illness.
“I am missing home, I’m not going to lie. It’s hard because even travelling now, my mum is in hospital at the moment, my dad hasn’t been very well, my brother just had a baby and I don’t get to be there with my family when normal people would like to be with them,” he said.
“It’s hard being from Australia because we can’t travel back and forth. There’s a lot of things people don’t see. They only see me winning, losing, throwing a racquet, doing those things.
“They don’t really understand the challenges that I face or what people on tour face, what’s going on in their personal lives.”
It surely takes a lot for an athlete to openly speak about the sickness of his parents and it typifies the kind of relationship he has with them.
